Hi, I am Min Gyu (Eddy) Sul
I am a backend/data engineer with a Masters in Computer Science graduating in December 2025.
About Me
I'm a full-stack software engineer with a strong focus on backend and data engineering, and currently a Master's student in Computer Science at Washington University in St. Louis, graduating in December 2025.
With expertise in Python, SQL, and cloud technologies, I've built projects across diverse industries including healthcare, fintech, edtech, and defense where I learned not only how to design scalable technical solutions, but also how to collaborate with people from a wide range of backgrounds and disciplines.
I'm especially interested in building scalable systems and data-driven pipelines that empower organizations to make smarter decisions and create solutions that have a real impact on people's daily lives. Recently, I've been expanding my skill set in cloud infrastructure and exploring how AI and LLMs can be integrated into backend and data engineering workflows.
Outside of coding, I'm a huge baseball nerd fascinated by the stats, strategy, and analytics behind the game. I can talk about baseball all day!

My professional journey and work experience

• Built HIPAA-compliant ETL pipelines in SQL Server using SSIS, stored procedures, and batch processing to reliably aggregate hospital data.
• Enabled historical analysis of 280,000+ blood transfusion records, giving clinicians clear insights into department and procedure-level trends.
• Delivered Tableau dashboards tracking key Operating Room metrics (First Case On-Time Starts, Turnaround Time), improving scheduling efficiency, cost control, and resource allocation.

• Developed secure, multi-tenant dashboards providing personalized insights for 300+ athletes and coaches, driving the product from prototype through cloud deployment.
• Engineered backend services to automate survey ingestion, chart generation, and SMS notifications with Celery and Twilio, reducing manual processing by 85% and saving 10+ developer hours/week.
• Strengthened authentication and data security by implementing OAuth and row-level access control, ensuring compliance-ready, role-based permissions across users.
• Migrated the platform to a cloud-ready environment by containerizing services and deploying on AWS ECS with CI/CD pipelines, boosting scalability and reliability.

• Trained state-of-the-art image restoration models on 70,000+ images, optimizing parameters (noise, step size) to improve PSNR metrics.
• Conducted comparative studies of plug-and-play restoration models, evaluating accuracy-efficiency trade-offs to guide model selection and deployment.

• Built RESTful Flask backend APIs to power a stock portfolio recommendation feature, enabling personalized investment advice for users.
• Designed and implemented a CAPM-based stock scoring algorithm with web-scraped data, driving data-driven portfolio recommendations.
• Collaborated with 20+ developers and PMs in agile sprints, contributing to a system that achieved 10,000+ user sign-ups within two weeks of launch.

• Cloud Computing – Mentored students on Docker, Kubernetes, and distributed data processing tools like Kafka and Spark through office hours and lab sessions.
• Intro to Data Science – Guided students in data processing, visualization, and modeling using Python libraries such as pandas, matplotlib, seaborn, and scikit-learn.

• Led a platoon of 15 soldiers as squad leader in the radio communications unit, supervising and training them during field exercises and combat simulations.
• Served as the battalion commander's personal radio operator, relaying classified messages during key training missions.
